What is a premium domain name?

A domain name that uses the dotcom extension (.com) and is easy to spell, remember and means something.

In 2022 there have already been some high 6 and some 7 figure domain sales. Most people know that the .com is the major extension and if you get anything else, even if the sales broker claims otherwise, you will have a traffic leak just like Overture discovered.

Many affiliate marketers go cheap on their domain investment and it can potentially be a real disaster.

In all my career, the one thing I saw startups go cheap on is domains. I guess if you know at some point someone paid less than 10 bucks for something and now you have to pay a lot more (a lot more!) your brain freezes up and what you do after that usually is no good.

People don’t do that with stocks, a person buying a share in Amazon for 3500 (written before the split) is paying almost 3500 more than what someone once paid. Same with real estate. Some homes for sale for 2 million once sold for 20k.

When the people that purchased CreditCards.com for over 2 million (just the domain) had their idea (commission off promoting credit card offers) they knew what they were doing. They sold that venture for hundreds of millions of dollars.

I see startups that will invest a small fortune in logo, design and video production just to build it all on top of a domain that is rubbish.

I watched a video about premium domains recently and the comments were all angry people about the prices and how dare these domain owners just hold the name and do nothing with them. Millions of real estate plots are like that too, it’s part of a capitalistic society and people let their hate get to them and they go buy a low end name just to pay a big price later on.

Recently NFTs.com sold for $15 Million and Connect.com was purchased for $10 Million.

I get upset too when I see a name I like going for a lot of money, but what should I do? Who am I spiting if I build my project on a low end name?
